Honouring 50 Years of Deadly by Davinder Hart

This design represents the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week and celebrates the strength, culture and achievements of First Nations Australians.

At the center of the artwork is a meeting place circle, surrounded by community members. This symbolises Indigenous and non-Indigenous people coming together to celebrate NAIDOC and participate in community events. The “U” shapes represent the people gathered in unity, connection and respect.

The four corners of the artwork represent workshops and cultural activities often shared during NAIDOC Week. In the bottom right corner is the weaving workshop, where women teach the art of weaving and how to create dilly bags. To the left is the weaponry and tools workshop, where knowledge is shared about traditional tools, how they were made, and how they were used.

Above are emu and kangaroo tracks, representing storytelling and the passing down of knowledge about these animals, including their cultural significance and traditional hunting practices. To the right of this is another meeting circle with surrounding “U” shapes, symbolising cultural yarns — a space to discuss Aboriginal history, lore, and the deep relationship between Mother Earth and First Nations people. It represents a time to share truth, build understanding, and strengthen connection.

The blue lines flowing throughout the design represent the spiritual energy and presence of our ancestors. They symbolise our old people watching over the community, standing beside each person in this proud and powerful moment of celebration.
