From the Ming Dynasty through the early years of the Republic of China in the early 20th century to the present day, the film spectacularly depicts the drama of three men and women who are repeatedly reincarnated, guided by a single sword that brings tragedy. This is a superb martial arts action film from the Ming Dynasty ("The First Generation") directed by Kin Hu, which is a dazzling example of the excellence of action depiction that has further evolved from "Chivalrous Woman" and "Cruel Dragon: Blood Dragon Dragon Gate Inn". The following film, "The Second Generation," a tragic love story from the early years of the Ming Dynasty, was directed by Lee Hsin, known as the "father of Taiwanese cinema," who led the "healthy realism" line in the 1960s and won three Golden Horse Awards for best director. Hou Hsiao-hsien also began his career under him.Pai Jing-Lui, who directed the contemporary version ("The Third Generation") that strongly evokes the emerging Taiwanese New Cinema, is the first Taiwanese filmmaker who studied film in Italy and became a director, having been devoted to Italian neorealismo.
