The last concert of Simon Goldberg's life! In April 1993, Simon Goldberg gave two concerts with the Mito Chamber Orchestra, which had just been founded in 1990. These two concerts were consequently his last. Three months later, on July 19, he passed away suddenly. Goldberg's swan song is truly recorded on this CD. The Hindemith piece on this CD was written in 1927, when Goldberg was concert master of the Berlin Philharmonic and Hindemith was a professor at the Berlin University of Music. Although Goldberg did not make any specific comments about this piece, it is natural to assume that he was intimately acquainted with Hindemith's compositional history. It is a pleasure to hear Goldberg conduct this rare and rarely recorded work. Bach, Mozart, and Haydn are Goldberg's favorites. In Bach, the tension is high, but the warmth of the music is unique. In Mozart, the tempo is slowed down, and it is no exaggeration to say that this is a romantic performance that is distinctly different from the old-fashioned performances that were popular at the time.Haydn is also well-dressed, and his joy and composure can be felt throughout the entire work. The finale of the symphony was played as an encore in this concert, and it was played with a completely different and relaxed expression.
