Vitamin K is necessary for healthy bone mineral density. Vitamin K has been shown to be essential for bone mineralization because it is a cofactor for the carboxylation of osteocalcin, a protein produced by osteoblasts that is responsible for binding calcium and depositing in the bone. This process is called bone mineralization.
