Description:
George Dyson was born in Halifax, England, to a working-class family. His talent manifested itself in the Baptist church he attended as a child, and he went straight to the Royal College of Music in London on a scholarship. He first studied organ, then composition under Stanford, and later in Italy and Germany, steadily advancing his career and eventually becoming one of the "most important British composers" of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Choral Symphony, written while he was still a student, is a large-scale Mendelssohn-esque work using Psalm 107, which describes "the expulsion of the Jews and their return to Israel. The theme presented in the overture is developed, and the final piece is a spectacular seascape reminiscent of Vaughan Williams. The other piece, "St. Paul's Journey to Melita," also depicts a sea scene and is another beautiful work with vivid images. Naxos Japan
