Mamey Sapote is a large, evergreen tree valued for both its sizeable fruits and its robust aesthetic. Its native to Central America and popularized in South Florida thanks to Cuban and Central American migration.
Mamey trees can grow quite large (reaching over 100’ if not maintained). The canopy is open, supporting only a few very thick branches. The dark green leaves give the mamey tree a vibrant appeal.
The flavor profile of mamey sapote fruit is deeply sweet and reminiscent of “traditional fall” flavors: think pumpkin pie meets sweet potato with hints of maple syrup. Mamey is commonly eaten raw out of hand, but is also popular in milkshakes, smoothies, baked goods, and ice cream.
All of the Mamey sapote trees at Incredible Edible Landscapes are grafted. This guarantees the fruit’s variety and a quicker yield compared to trees grown from seed. An established tree can produce hundreds of fruits, between 1-4 lbs each.
Mamey fruits are as lovely and unique as the trees themselves. Rough, brown skin conceals the soft scoopable flesh of the Mamey which ranges in color from salmon pink to deep red. Each fruit houses a large, shiny seed that’s practically art on its own.
Mamey sapote fruits take 1-2 ~years~ to come to full maturity on the tree. To check your mamey fruits’ ripeness, we recommend scratch testing. Without removing the fruit from the tree, scratch the rough brown outer layer of skin with a fingernail. If the deeper layer is bright green, your fruit is not ready yet; If it’s yellow, orange, red, or brown, your fruit is ready to pick. Fruits will continue to soften off the tree as long as they are picked at full maturity.
Mamey sapote trees prefer a well-draining soil that is deep and rich with nutrients. Wind-resistant and tolerant of coastal regions, but not drought-tolerant.
