Coffee production in Papua New Guinea began in the 1920s with seeds brought from Jamaica’s famous Blue Mountain, introducing the country to the world of coffee. At first, large plantations dominated the industry, with 18 major farms producing most of the coffee. Today, however, these plantations account for just 15% of the country’s total output. The real story of Papua New Guinea coffee lies with the smallholder farmers, who tend to their "coffee gardens" scattered across the highlands. These subsistence farmers live off the land and grow coffee alongside other crops. Ranging from a handful of trees to hundreds, these aren’t traditional coffee farms—just devoted farmers nurturing exceptional, high-quality coffee beans.
