An intro to pattern cutting is just that, see if you fancy diving into the detailed world of pattern cutting. You will use industry pattern blocks to adapt to you to have a finished toile and block at the end of the course. 

In more details - After measuring your body we will be choose an industry standard block closest to your size which we will then adjust to fit you. After creating the basic pattern you will make a toile from calico (or similar fabric), this will be fitted on you.

The alterations pinned or marked on the toile will then be transferred to the pattern draft which should ensure you have a fitted block that can be used as a start point for many different designs.

Following this we will look at the design of the simple fitted top/dress you would like to make and manipulate your personal block to create the pattern for this.

Which you will then cut in calico or similar fabric and make a toile which we will then fit to you. 

Working from our brand new venue in Plymouth’s Museum, The Box you will have great access to a number of facilities. The Make shop is just opposite, the Box’s café is right there for any extra refreshments you may need and the workshop space is bright, professional and ready for you to come and be creative.

What you will learn:

How to measure your body.

How to fit garments onto the body, which may include alterations such as moving the bust point for a fuller bust, adjusting the shoulder width or body length and adjusting the neckline or armhole as required.

The manipulation darts to create style lines and adding fullness and flare to your patterns.

What you will need: 

A sewing machine – if you need to use one of ours please let us know when you book

A basic sewing kit – scissors, pins tape measure etc – we do have a supply of these if you need to use ours. 

Calico or similar fabric for the toile.

An image of the simple fitted top in a woven fabric (not stretch) you would like to create on the final day.

Fabric for your final garment (amount will depend on the design, this isn’t needed for the first day)

Pattern master, and / or long and short ruler.

Dots and crosses pattern paper approx. 4m (for sale in the make shop)

Level: Intermediate

Must be able to sew and have some knowledge of domestic pattern use.
