The design draws inspiration from the mythical goddess Daphne, a naiad in Greek mythology associated with freshwater and leaves such as fountains, springs, laurel leaves and streams.

In the myth, Apollo becomes infatuated with Daphne, a woman dedicated to remaining a virgin. Despite his relentless pursuit, she staunchly rejects his advances. At the moment he captures her, she transforms into a laurel tree, a scene famously captured in Bernini’s sculpture, “Apollo and Daphne.”

Thus, this design is inspired by the laurel tree, with the gem elegantly framed by hand-sculpted laurel leaves. Historically, laurel was used to create wreaths and crowns, symbols of victory in ancient Greek sporting events. Today, it represents achievement, and a laureate is someone who has been honored for their accomplishments.
