1. Increase Power Output

A turbocharger forces more air (and therefore more oxygen) into the engine’s cylinders.
More air → more fuel can be burned → more power.
This allows a smaller engine to produce the same (or greater) power as a larger naturally aspirated one.

Because a turbo lets a smaller engine produce more power, car makers can use smaller, lighter engines without sacrificing performance.

The car feels sluggish or slow to accelerate.

You might notice it struggles to reach higher speeds or has poor hill-climbing ability.

This happens because the turbo isn’t compressing enough air into the engine.

2. Excessive Exhaust Smoke

Blue or grey smoke: often means oil is leaking into the exhaust due to worn turbo seals or bearings.

Black smoke: means the engine is running too rich (too much fuel, not enough air) because the turbo isn’t providing enough boost.

3. Whining or Siren Noise

A healthy turbo makes a faint “whistle.”

A failing turbo may make a loud whining, whining siren, or grinding noise, often due to damaged bearings or blades.

4. Check Engine Light

Modern cars have sensors that monitor turbo boost pressure.

If the turbo underperforms or overboosts, it can trigger the Check Engine Light (CEL).

5. Increased Oil Consumption

Damaged turbo seals can let oil leak into the intake or exhaust system.

You might notice you need to top up oil more frequently.

6. Boost Pressure Problems

Boost gauge (if your car has one) may show low or inconsistent boost pressure.
