• NOx forms when combustion temperatures in the engine get too high (above 2500°F / 1370°C).

• The EGR system lowers these temperatures by sending a controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the combustion chambers.

• This gas doesn’t burn again — it just dilutes the air-fuel mixture, making the explosion cooler and cleaner.

• Helps vehicles meet emission standards set by governments and environmental agencies.

• Reduces pollutants that harm the environment and human health.

Besides emissions control, the EGR valve also supports overall engine performance:

1. Prevents engine knocking – Cooler combustion prevents premature detonation of the air-fuel mixture.

2. Improves fuel efficiency – Under certain conditions, EGR helps the engine burn fuel more completely.

3. Reduces cylinder pressure – Lower pressure and temperature inside the cylinders help extend engine life.

4. Stabilizes combustion – By controlling airflow, it helps the engine run more smoothly at different speeds and loads.

If the EGR valve is stuck open, too much exhaust gas enters the intake at idle.
This causes the engine to idle roughly, shake, or even stall.

2. Poor Engine Performance

If the valve is stuck closed, no exhaust gas recirculates.
This raises combustion temperature, leading to knocking, pinging, or loss of power, especially under load or acceleration.

3. Check Engine Light (CEL)

The ECM monitors the EGR system.
A faulty EGR valve often triggers the Check Engine Light, with codes like P0400–P0409 (related to EGR flow issues).

4. Reduced Fuel Efficiency

When the EGR valve doesn’t open or close correctly, combustion becomes less efficient, causing the engine to burn more fuel.

5. Increased Emissions / Failed Emission Test

A stuck or clogged EGR valve can cause higher NOx emissions or even black smoke from the exhaust.

6. Knocking or Tapping Sounds

When combustion gets too hot (from a closed EGR valve), you might hear pinging or knocking noises — signs of pre-detonation.

7. Engine Surging or Hesitation

An EGR valve that opens or closes at the wrong time can cause surging or hesitation during acceleration.
