ZONE is the third book by Vienna-based Australian artist James Tunks, published by Perimeter Editions. It explores the intersection of photography, technology, and time, reflecting on how modern image-making tools—now infused with AI and machine learning—extend beyond human perception and memory.
The book contrasts vivid color with precise black-and-white images, combining symbols like birds of prey, the Apollo Mission, and remote Icelandic landscapes. These visual juxtapositions highlight themes of exploration, secrecy, and technological evolution. Tunks uses fragmented portraits and echoing images to challenge viewers' perspectives and question the nature of photographic representation.
Like his previous works Into Dust and AI (Art Index), ZONE blurs boundaries between past and future, reality and simulation. It ends with a fictional narrative about a lone protagonist who possesses a powerful prototype camera capable of extraordinary feats—capturing thermal traces, distant lunar artifacts, and even human breath—raising philosophical concerns about surveillance and the reach of modern technology.
Ultimately, ZONE presents a vision of photography as both a tool of minute observation and a potentially disruptive force.
