As a "special project commemorating the 30th anniversary of Eugene Ormandy's death," Tower Records will release 10 titles from the vast amount of recordings Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra made for Sony Classical and RCA, including the quintessential stereo recordings. The rich orchestral sound of the Philadelphia Orchestra, with its thick string section at its core, flawless woodwinds, and beautiful brass, has been preserved, and the orchestra's peak of 20th century orchestral art, from the vigorous 1950s and 60s to the increasingly mature and deep 70s, has been beautifully engraved. ■ Tchaikovsky's ballet music was a staple of Ormandy's analog period, so much so that he has recorded it three times since the LP era. This album is a masterful performance recorded in 1961 and 1963 and reissued many times during the LP era, and this time the entire work, not just the suite, is included on two CDs. The Philadelphia Orchestra, in its heyday, was able to produce a sound of such precision that the charm of Tchaikovsky's ballets could not be more fully appreciated.
